
{"id":5906,"date":"2022-02-03T11:05:21","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T16:05:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/?p=5906"},"modified":"2022-02-03T11:06:58","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T16:06:58","slug":"picture-this-pictorial-health-warnings-discourage-parents-from-buying-sugary-drinks-for-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/picture-this-pictorial-health-warnings-discourage-parents-from-buying-sugary-drinks-for-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Picture this: Pictorial health warnings discourage parents from buying sugary drinks for kids"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:70%\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>A study<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;published this week in&nbsp;<em>PLOS Medicine<\/em>&nbsp;is the first to examine in a realistic store setting whether pictorial health warnings on sugary drinks have an impact on which beverages parents choose to buy for their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" class=\"wp-image-5930\" style=\"width: 270px; margin-left: 15px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Pictorial_WLs_figures3.jpg\" alt=\"\">For this randomized trial, parents of children ages 2\u201312 years were given a shopping task in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/experimental-grocery-stores\/\"><strong>UNC Mini Mart<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 a mock convenience store \u201claboratory\u201d designed and built by senior author&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/team\/lindsey-smith-taillie\/\">Lindsey Smith Taillie, PhD<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>and lead author&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/team\/marissa-g-hall\/\">Marissa Hall, PhD<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the experiment, one group of parents shopped from a beverage selection that included pictorial warnings on the sugary drink options (<em>right<\/em>); the other group shopped the same beverage selection, but with no warnings on the sugary drinks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The pictorial warning labels led to a 17-percentage-point difference in sugary drink purchases: In the group who saw the experimental labels while they shopped, 28% of parents bought their child a sugary drink, compared to 45% of parents in the group that did not see warnings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pictorial warnings also led to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fewer calories purchased from sugary drinks,&nbsp;<\/li><li>Lower intentions to serve sugary drinks to their child,&nbsp;<\/li><li>Feeling more in control of healthy eating decisions, and&nbsp;<\/li><li>Greater thinking about the harms of sugary drinks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings indicate that pictorial warnings could be a promising policy option for reducing parents\u2019 purchases of sugary drinks for their children and ultimately reducing kids\u2019 sugary drink consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the team\u2019s first experiment to be completed using the team\u2019s UNC Mini Mart space following the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/18\/16\/8764\/htm\"><strong>validation pilot study<\/strong><\/a>.
