Two-thirds of us are now more likely to go for foods marketed as lower-calorie and &#8220;better-for-you,&#8221; and that means we&#8217;re finally eating fewer calories.<\/p>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve\u00a0<strong><a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #4774cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thesalt\/2014\/01\/09\/261050610\/food-firms-trim-trillions-of-calories-from-packaged-snacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>,<\/strong> 16 companies, including General Mills, Kraft and Nestle, have removed 6.4 trillion calories from the marketplace. The calorie cuts \u2014 tracked by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation \u2014 are part of a nationwide effort to tackle the obesity epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>And a new paper\u00a0<strong><a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #4774cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ajpmonline.org\/article\/S0749-3797%2814%2900248-7\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">American Journal of Preventive Medicine<\/em>\u00a0finds that as a results of company&#8217;s trimming calories, Americans are cutting back on salty snacks and sugary treats.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that families with children cut 101 calories per day [per person] in their purchases,&#8221; researcher\u00a0<strong><a style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; color: #4774cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfoodresearchprogram.org\/team\/barry-m-popkin-ph-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barry Popkin<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, tells us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Read the articles referenced in the NPR piece, published in AJPM <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0749379714002487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> (<\/strong>calories sold) and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0749379714002499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> <\/strong>(calories purchased).
